The Video Platform Grants Users Authority to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a full-scale rollout. This development aligns with a surge in AI content, driven by emerging content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that almost 10% of the quickest rising content creators on another major platform primarily display content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is considered “AI slop”, a phrase for inferior, bulk-generated content that is frequently illogical or surreal.

Our research shows that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, including computer-generated images to science explainers, and we intend to give people the option to increase or decrease of that, based on their own preferences,” stated a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its app tagged as made with AI. In total, in excess of 100 mn media items are added to the service daily, making clips made by AI a limited part of its total content library.

User Control Features

Users will be capable of decrease or raise the amount of AI-generated videos they watch by accessing the “manage topic” feature in the app and selecting AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be modified under the filter encompass news, style, cosmetics, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s guidelines oblige users to label convincing AI-generated content, and it bans dangerous deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.

In addition, the service will henceforth attach an “AI-made” watermark to content made using its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This action is aimed to deter users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is also introducing a $2m AI literacy fund for professionals and groups to develop informative material about ethical AI use. This initiative will assist educational bodies focused on training computer science.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has justified its moderation strategy, amid controversy over plans to make redundant hundreds of review team members in the UK. TikTok is set to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation team in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but automated tools can protect employees by removing the most graphic content before it is viewed by people. The platform reported a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of harmful content as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
