A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
